Susannah Phillips was born in 1816 to William and Mary Phillips in Gloucestershire, England, one of the youngest of a large family. Her father died in 1825 when she was 9 years old.

John and Susannah married in the parish church of Suckley, a village of Worcestershire, in 1826. A few months later, their son Thomas was born.

In 1840, Wilford Woodruff arrived in the area as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and taught the church. Over 1000 members of the United Brethren and others in the area converted in 1840, including the Green, Burrup, and Phillips families.
Migration to Illinois and Utah
John and Susannah immigrated to the United States in 1841 with Edward Phillips and other members of the Phillips and Burrup families. They lived with the Latter-day Saints in Nauvoo, Illinois, before their eventual migration to Utah.

Thomas, at age 15, joined his uncle Edward, his grandmothers Susannah Burrup and Mary Phillips, and his cousin James in settling a farm in Camp Creek, east of Nauvoo.
John and Susannah lived in the city near the temple lot. They contributed to the construction of the temple, and Susannah participated in the newly-formed Relief Society.
The threat of mob violence forced them to evacuate their homes in 1845 and 1846. They spent some time in the temporary settlement at Winter Quarters, Nebraska, before resettling in nearby Lake Branch, Iowa.
In July 1849, the Green family joined a wagon train bound for Utah. Ann, Charlotte, Robert, James, Mary Elizabeth, and Charles, at ages ranging from 13 to newborn, traveled together. The caravan arrived in the Salt Lake valley in October.
