Daniel Harvey was born in 1830 to John and Elizabeth Harvey in Stanford-le-Hope, Essex, England. His mother died when he was 11, and his father when he was 13. He seems to have spent his teen and young adult years as a worker in London.
Hannah Smuin was born in 1834 to Joseph and Hannah Smuin in Radley, Oxfordshire, England.
