Parents' Childhood
Joseph Smuin was born in 1794 to Thomas and Mary Smuin in Radley, Oxfordshire, England, the eldest in a family of seven children.
Esther Hannah Pearce was born in 1797 to Richard and Hannah Pearce in nearby Uffington, Oxfordshire, England, sixth in a family of nine children.
William J. Irons was born in 1802 to Edward and Hannah Irons in Buckinghamshire, England.
Mary Church was born in 1805 in Buckinghamshire, England.

Joseph and Hannah married in 1816 and lived in Radley for 26 years.

In 1842, Joseph accidentally fell into the River Thames at Sandford Lock and drowned. At his death, the children were ages 26 to 4, with five of them under age 18.
The family moved a few times after Joseph's death, ending up in Eaton Bray, near Northall.
William and Mary Irons
William and Mary married in 1826 and had two children.

The family struggled with poverty. Hannah was a seamstress and a lace maker. She and other family members also learned to weave hats as a source of income.
Around 1846, Susannah (age 24) moved with her young son, George, to London. There, she met missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was converted. 4-year-old George befriended the missionaries, and they would have him stand on a box and sing to attract passersby.
In the next two years, Hannah, Mary (age 29), John (age 27), Ruth (age 19), Hannah Jr. (age 13), Harriet (age 11), and James (age 9) converted to the church. Later, Thomas also joined the church. (George did not.)
In 1857, Mary died, leaving behind 5 children. Her husband, John, had abandoned them. The children were taken in by William and Hannah, Susannah and Thomas, and Hannah and Daniel.
By 1871, William and Hannah were living in Finchley, Greater London. Sometime in the next few years, they were able to immigrate, joining most of their children and grandchildren in Utah (details are unclear). They settled near Daniel and Hannah Harvey in Kaysville.
Descendants
Most of the Smuin family immigrated to Utah, but they traveled separately:
- James and his wife immigrated shortly after their marriage in 1859, settling in Lehi.
- Harriett immigrated with James in 1859; she married in 1861, spent a few years in Salt Lake City, then settled in Kaysville.
- Hannah lived in London, then immigrated with her family in 1863, settling in Kaysville.
- Thomas raised his family in the Radley area until they immigrated in 1868, settling in Davis County (his daughter, Eliza, immigrated alone in 1861; daughters Matilda and Rachel immigrated with Hannah in 1863; and son Thomas H. immigrated with his cousin Martha in 1866).
- Ruth's surviving daughters Ellen and Emma immigrated when they were adults (Ellen with Thomas in 1868; Emma sometime before 1875.)
- John and his family moved frequently, eventually living in London before immigrating in 1869 and settling in Ogden (his daughter, Martha, immigrated with her cousin Thomas in 1866).
- Susannah and her family lived in Bedfordshire for a few years; she and her husband immigrated in 1872 and settled in Ogden. (Her son, George, immigrated alone in 1864.)
Two children remained in England:
- George lived with his family in Radley.
- Thomas Irons and his family lived in Bedfordshire for a few years, then moved to London.
