Parents' Childhood
John was born in 1801 to James and Mary Green in Worcestershire, England.
Susannah Burrup was born in 1804 to Edward and Susannah Burrup in Worcestershire, England.
Susannah Phillips was born in 1816 to William and Mary Phillips in Gloucestershire, England, one of the youngest of a large family. Her father died in 1825 when she was 9 years old.

John and Susannah married in the parish church of Suckley, a village of Worcestershire, in 1826. A few months later, their son Thomas was born.

John's brother-in-law, John Burrup, had recently married Ann Phillips. In 1835, John married Ann's younger sister, Susannah.

Two (or three?) children died as infants. Thomas spent at least some time being raised by his grandmother, Susannah Burrup, and his uncle John; Thomas is listed in their household in the 1841 census. John and Susannah Green raised sisters Ann and Charlotte.
Susannah's older brother, Edward, was a preacher for the local United Brethren church. In 1840, Wilford Woodruff arrived in the area as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and taught the church. Over 300 members of the United Brethren converted in 1840, including the Green, Burrup, and Phillips families.
Migration to Illinois and Utah
John and Susannah immigrated to the United States in 1841 with Edward Phillips and other members of the Phillips and Burrup families. They lived with the Latter-day Saints in Nauvoo, Illinois, before their eventual migration to Utah.

Thomas, at age 15, joined his uncle Edward, his grandmothers Susannah Burrup and Mary Phillips, and his cousin James in settling a farm in Camp Creek, east of Nauvoo.
John and Susannah lived in the city near the temple lot. They contributed to the construction of the temple, and Susannah participated in the newly-formed Relief Society.
The threat of mob violence forced them to evacuate their homes in 1845 and 1846. They spent some time in the temporary settlement at Winter Quarters, Nebraska, before resettling in nearby Lake Branch, Iowa.
In July 1849, the Green family joined a wagon train bound for Utah. Ann, Charlotte, Robert, James, Mary Elizabeth, and Charles, at ages ranging from 13 to newborn, traveled together. The caravan arrived in the Salt Lake valley in October.
Life in Utah
The Green family settled in the Kaysville area, north of Salt Lake City, where John and Susannah had 5 additional children.

The family joined Edward Phillips as the earliest settlers of Kaysville, Utah. They built small cabins and established farms near Kay's Creek. The settlement grew to over 400 people by 1853.
In 1851, the Kays Ward of the church was formed, with Edward Phillips and John Green serving as counselors to bishop William Kay.
John entered a polygamous marriage with the widow Jane Ellis in 1855; she died in 1863. He may also have been sealed to Elizabeth Beddoe and Agnes Fergusen.
Around 1857, John started a business providing hay and horses for wagons traveling along the Wasatch front through Kaysville. The growing business district developed into the Kay's Creek community, and eventually the city of Layton. In 1866, the family moved into a brick home nearby (located near the modern-day American Legion building at 128 S Main St in Layton).
John died in 1886.
Susannah lived with John Jr.'s family in Layton until her death in 1902.
