Susannah Phillips was born in 1816 to William and Mary Phillips in [Gloucestershire, England], one of the youngest of a large family. Her father died in 1825 when she was 9 years old.

John and Susannah married in the parish church of Suckley, a village of Worcestershire, in 1826. A few months later, their son Thomas was born.
