Joseph Smuin was born in 1794 to Thomas and Mary Smuin in Radley, Oxfordshire, England, the eldest in a family of seven children.
Esther Hannah Pearce was born in 1797 to Richard and Hannah Pearce in nearby Uffington, Oxfordshire, England, sixth in a family of nine children.

Descendants
Most of the family immigrated to Utah, but they traveled separately:

- Hannah lived in London, then immigrated with her family in 1863, settling in Kaysville
- Thomas raised his family in Radley until they immigrated in 1868, settling in Davis County
- John and his family moved frequently, eventually living in London before immigrating in 1869 and settling in Ogden
- Susanah and her family lived in Bedfordshire for a few years, immigrating in 1872 and settling in Ogden
