Joseph Smuin was born in 1794 to Thomas and Mary Smuin in Radley, Oxfordshire, England, the eldest in a family of seven children.
Esther Hannah Pearce was born in 1797 to Richard and Hannah Pearce in nearby Uffington, Oxfordshire, England, sixth in a family of nine children.
William J. Irons was born in 1802 to Edward and Hannah Irons in Buckinghamshire, England.
Mary Church was born in 1805 in Buckinghamshire, England.

Joseph accidentally fell into the river at Sandford Lock at drowned. At his death, the children were ages 26 to 4, with five of them under age 18.

Descendants
Most of the Smuin family immigrated to Utah, but they traveled separately:
- James and his wife immigrated shortly after their marriage in 1859, settling in Lehi.
- Harriett immigrated with James in 1859; she married in 1861, spent a few years in Salt Lake City, then settled in Kaysville.
- Hannah lived in London, then immigrated with her family in 1863, settling in Kaysville.
- Thomas raised his family in Radley until they immigrated in 1868, settling in Davis County (his daughter, Eliza, immigrated alone in 1861; daughters Matilda and Rachel immigrated with Hannah in 1863; and Thomas H. immigrated with his cousin Martha in 1866).
- John and his family moved frequently, eventually living in London before immigrating in 1869 and settling in Ogden (his daughter, Martha, immigrated with her cousin Thomas in 1866).
- Susanah and her family lived in Bedfordshire for a few years, immigrating in 1872 and settling in Ogden.
A few children remained in England:
- Mary lived with her family in Bedfordshire.
- George lived with his family in Radley.
- Ruth and her family lived in Bedfordshire; after her husband died, she remarried and moved to Greater London.
- Thomas Irons and his family lived in Bedfordshire for a few years, then moved to London.
