Parents' Childhood

Emanuel Hanks was born in 1861 to William and Sarah Hanks in Horsley, Gloucestershire, England, the youngest child in a large family.

Maraldia Willey was born in 1868 to William and Nancy Willey in Bountiful, Utah.

Emanuel's Immigration

Emanuel immigrated to Utah in 1881 at age 19, traveling alone. On the ship from Liverpool to New York, he met William Wallace Willey, a returning missionary. Emanuel found work and lodging with Joseph Mabey, William's brother-in-law.

Later that year, Emanuel paid to help his parents join him in Utah.

While living with the Mabeys, Emanuel met their niece, Maraldia.

The family farmed and grew an orchard. Emanuel built the houses the family lived in and a house for his parents.

The Hanks family spent a few years in Vernal, but moved back to Bountiful when grandfather William Hanks became sick towards the end of his life.

The family experienced multiple untimely deaths. Lawrence was kicked by a horse as a toddler, with long-term effects that eventually led to his death at age 5. Grandmother Sarah Hanks was burned to death when her clothes caught fire while cooking. 2-year-old Cumorah drowned when she was left unattended during a camping trip. Wallace became sick at age 17 and never recovered until his death at age 21.

After Emanuel's death, Maraldia spent her last years living with Phyllis.
