The family spent a few years in Vernal, but moved back to Bountiful when grandfather William Hanks became sick towards the end of his life.
They experienced multiple untimely deaths. Lawrence was kicked by a horse as a toddler, with long-term effects that eventually led to his death at age 5. Grandmother Sarah Hanks was burned to death when her clothes caught fire while cooking. 2-year-old Cumorah drowned when she was left unattended during a camping trip. Wallace had skeletal tuberculosis and was sick from age 17 until his death at age 21.
After Emanuel's death, Maraldia spent her last years living with Phyllis.
